Q. What is the
difference between "Crack" and Cocaine?
A. Cocaine is a local or
topical anesthetic that stimulates the central nervous system.
it can be "snorted" (inhaled through the nose),
injected, or smoked by inhaling its vapors. Cocaine is sometimes
called coke, toot, or nose candy. Crack is a very concentrated
potent form of cocaine in its
free-base form, and can only be smoked. The
effects of the drug begin with seconds after entering the
system by smoking its vapors. A brief but intense euphoric
feeling of well-being peaks within minutes, and is
followed by a severe depression and a craving for more.
The individual is constantly trying unsuccessfully to achieve
the same original "rush" by doing additional amounts
continuously. Q. What are the signs of
Cocaine or "Crack" use?
A. List of possible signs:
Dilated pupils, Dry
mouth and nose Runny
nose or nosebleeds, Frequent
lip-licking, Excessive
restless activity, Lack
of interest in food or sleep, Irritable,
argumentative, nervous Talkative;
changes subject rapidly Chronic
cold or sinus/nasal problems. Evidence
of paraphernalia; e.g., glass vials, glass pipe, white
crystalline powder, razor blades, syringes, needle marks.
Extreme sensitivity to loud
noises, leading to paranoia.
Q. What are the health risks
of using "Crack" or Cocaine?
A. Cocaine over-stimulates the
circulatory, respiratory, and central nervous system. Cocaine
interferes with the natural chemical in the brain that
stimulates and regulates the firing of nerve cells. It
increases the Dopamine level, stimulating the pleasure center of
the brain. Muscle
spasms in the various parts of the body can occur.
Over-stimulation of the nervous system can cause convulsions
which can lead to respiratory collapse and death. Long term
crack (rock-like bits of cocaine that can be smoked) user have
also suffered permanent damage to the cortex, the part of the
brain that is used to think. Lung disorders are possible
from the smoking of crack. Heart problems are common and
infections occur more easily from injecting cocaine. The
additives that are common include talc, baby laxatives, baking
soda, even poisons, have been known to cause severe health
problems and even death.
